There’s a great connection between the amounts of fiber we eat and our colon cancer risk. But not all types of fiber are equally effective to prevent the development of colon cancer. People in western countries typically consume more processed foods which are generally low in fiber. Processing of food strips them of their healthy fiber. It’s like giving an old product a new look and a better label. Before the industrialization on food, functional foods were an advantage to civilization. These plants proved to be resistant to diseases, have better growth and fertility.
The industrialization of our food production entailed a mass production of foods we consume. Then, our food necessitated processing and standardization. The processing produced new kinds of food that weren’t tested by time. When this happened, many components that had originally been present in our traditional foods were destroyed.

We’ve known broccoli. It’s a functional food that has the compound sulforaphane, a phytochemical that inhibits the inflammation of cancer. Who haven’t eaten potato lately? Mashed, French fried or in any which way. Solanum tuverosum, its scientific name, is an edible tuber that originated from southern montagne Andes of South America. The wild species originated from Peru. It’s one of the oldest crop humankind have cultivated, as far back as 7 to 10 thousand years ago. Worldwide, potato is the fourth largest food crop after rice, wheat and corn. Dishes around the world cook this versatile tuber in various ways.

The potato is a functional food. But researches show that the cancer fighting properties of the potato is hidden in the skin. So if we’ve eaten French fries or mashed potatoes lately with the skin stripped off, the cancer fighting phytochemicals are stripped off too. Our morbid fear of cancer makes us do crazy things. Who haven’t heard of an uncle or a relative who self-medicated? We fool ourselves by taking dubious alternative treatments advertised on the net. In desperation, we turn a blind eye when we aren’t even sure if it works or it has lethal side effects. Particularly, if you got cancer, you try almost anything in the hope that you can get a cure. No need to beat ourself with a stick.

Rimso-50 or DMSO

Here is one whacky alternative treatment that gets the eager attention of cancer stricken people. This product failed the clinical trial at phase 1. Testing was halted for safety concerns. We’re aware that if a product doesn’t make it at phase 1, it doesn’t qualify for FDA approval. Rimso-50, DMSO or dimethyl sulfoxide is an industrial by-product of paper making. It was promoted in the early 60s as an alternative cancer treatment. more…
