Cancer cell’s secret of immortality
Apoptosis helps to establish a natural balance between cell death and cell renewal in mature animals by destroying excess, damaged, or abnormal cells. Also called programmed cell death is a highly regulated cellular suicide process for growth and survival in cell. Apoptosis is a rapid process occurring in single cells that are engulfed immediately after death by immune system cells such as macrophages. However, the balance between survival and apoptosis often tips towards the former in cancer cells. Cancer cells often survives and reproduces even if there genetic materials are damaged, by not activating apoptosis.
Apoptotic weapons: functional foods
Several functional foods are known to inhibit mechanisms used by cancer cells to avoid apoptosis significantly, suppressing cell proliferation and sensitizing cells to apoptosis induction.
