Some doctors are starting to get back to the basics of medicine. Hippocrates, the father of medicine, wrote two thousand and five hundred years ago to “Let your food be your medicine and let your medicine be your food”. Surely, it’s not about throwing away the last century of medical advance, but using a balance with the pills the modern medicine brought and the chicken soup of granny. Again it’s not a debate on ethics, but the use of common sense with all the scientific knowledge available today.
After all, food is the one medicine that we seemingly willing to swallow at least three times a day. Why not make it count, and add up the tasty dishes made with inexpensive ingredients from the local market to help upgrade our general conditions.
Take mushrooms as example
A team of researchers from the Arizona State University showed that white bottoms mushrooms, yes the one you find at your grocery store not in a supplement shop, can raise our immune system from 3 to 5 times more than our normal level. Cancer wise, you help your body by adding soldiers that will fight for you. Furthermore, mushrooms contain an aromatase inhibitor that stops the conversion of sexual hormones into estrogen that cancer cells especially breast cancer and prostate cancer strive on to grow.
As tools for cancer
And this is only one example; imagine, you got like over 30 others functional foods you can play with. Some will affect the inflammation produced by cancer cell like ginger and pomegranate. Some will storm down angiogenesis like green tea and red wine. Some like broccoli and parsley will even act like a chemotherapy on cancer cell and some like turmeric will attenuate side effects of existing drugs .
