An apple a day keeps the cancer away

In Greek mythology, Gaia offered a tree with golden apples to her son Zeus and his bride Hera on their wedding day. Guarded by a serpent, this apple had the power to give immortality. These golden apples became involved with many tales of love, bribery and temptation from the abduction of Helen of Troy to the work of Hercules. In those times, apples were a delicacy and were regarded as an aphrodisiac. They were cultivated in the pleasure gardens of the wealthy throughout the world in spite of the almost instinctive knowledge that they may bring chaos and destruction. There is some truth to this myth; apples can bring chaos and destruction but only against cancer. The apple has always been close to science. Whereas the apple was the fruit of knowledge in the Garden of Eden or struck an idea on Newton, this fruit has a very close relation with humanity.

Important notice

Apples play an important part in diet within the American society. They are among the most popular fruits consumed in the United States. However, in the last decades while the percapita consumption of processed apples has increased, the consumption of fresh apples declined. Processed apples have a tendency to lose most of the flavonoids asĀ  the active phytochemical comes mostly from the peel which is removed.

Latest Cancer Researches

There are about 300 articles on how apples can affect cancer. Interestingly, the apple is shown to potentiate the anticancer actions of paclitaxel. While most of the cancer research posts on anti-proliferation and apoptosis induction, only one article showed an anti-inflammation effect. But none on angiogenesis.
