healthy basket
Clearly, cancer is a major cause of death in most parts of the world. Mortality statistics reveal that one out of three deaths is due to cancer. Also, cancer inflicts too much suffering.

Cancer is a genetic disease. Generally, this is how most people think. If your dad had it so would you. However, scientific research doesn’t support this way of thinking. Heredity doesn’t necessary give you an ill fated road map to your death bed. Your genes aren’t the most critical factor but rather, what you eat! Your genes would be influenced by what goes through your mouth. However, eating habit are the most important factor.

Here’s good news if you’re thinking just how you’d prevent cancer. The National Cancer Institute promotes five important foods to prevent cancer.

Vegetables

broccoli, cauliflower, onion, garlic, carrot, sweet potato, spinach, beans, avocado, lettuce, and asparagus – are some you should include in your every day meals. Cruciferous vegetables like broccoli, cauliflower and kale plus tomatoes are loaded with potent phytochemicals and antioxidants. They reduce your risk of prostate and other types of cancer.

Fruits

Fruit isn’t difficult to eat. Most of us love fruits. Eat fresh organically grown fruits raw. If juiced, consume the pulp as well to get the most benefits. Luscious red grapes, strawberries, raspberries, blueberries are brimming with antioxidants that fight cancer. Fruits prevent the absorption of cancer causing nitrosamines from processed food and from soil chemicals. The deeper the color of berries the richer in antioxidants and anti-carcinogenic phytochemicals.

Fish

Cold water fish are the one we look for. Fish oils protect you from prostate and colon cancer. Deep ocean fishes such as Nordic wild fishes are stuffed with omega 3 fatty acids. These are essential fatty acids that prevent initiation of breast cancer. Fish oils works by decreasing bad cholesterol that sets off inflammation- a pathway to cancer growth.

Teas

Teas – specifically green tea – are loaded with anti-cancer chemicals. While vegetables and fruits provide essential nutrients, green tea is the richest in antioxidants. Drinking at least three cups of tea can protect you from a variety of cancer growths. They halt the transformation of normal cells into cancerous cells.

Soy products

Protein-rich soy is packed with phytochemicals responsible for the prevention of breast cancer. Drink your soy milk, tofu, granules or pulse and gain the benefits. But avoid processed soy.

Bottom line

Wiliam Li said that mother nature have laced plants with weapons to fight cancer. If you’d ask again, what can I do to prevent cancer? Consume five to ten servings of veggies and fruits daily, drink your soy and tea plus enjoy your salmon steak. Cheers!

TomatinaFight6

You’ve heard of tomato fights in Europe. Once a year in Spain, 240, 000 pounds of cheery red tomatoes are thrown on the streets. An estimated 30,000 people descend In Bunol at the sunny Valencia region to celebrate the festival of tomatoes. In a spirit of merry making, people throw tomatoes at each other. Definitely, it’s the biggest food fight in the world! Imagine the spectacle and smell of squished and smashed tomatoes with the rich red pigment splattered everywhere. It looks like a lot of waste. It looks like a battleground too. more…

Food_Supplements_Prove_Harmful_cancer
Food supplements including multivitamins and minerals are popularly sold online. Believing the claims of these supplements, unsuspecting cancer patients consume them like magic pills only to end up frustrated when their expectations aren’t fulfilled.

When it comes to cancer prevention, the best is still a diet rich in fruits and vegetables. As I have discussed in an earlier blog, vegetables eaten along with anti-cancer medications proved to be very beneficial in the fight against cancer. But, Vitamin B12, folic acid, even Vitamin A, carotene and Vitamin E proved to be harmful for cancer patients when taken in concentrated and capsule form. more…

Pomegranate_tofu_cancer_food_combinaison
In my quest for foods that fight cancer, I was able to discover two unlikely plant foods, though worlds apart but highly effective against prostate cancer, namely, the pomegranate and the soy based tofu.

Pomegranate is a native of Iran and found in the Mediterranean while tofu is an Asian delicacy common to Chinese, Korean and Japanese cuisine.

Pomegranate

Numerous studies and researches conducted on the anti-carcinogenic properties of the pomegranate have convinced me that there is a wealth of knowledge here that would highly benefit prostate cancer patients. In one study, cancer cells were exposed to pomegranate extract and these cells failed to thrive but were killed. The more concentrated the pomegranate extract was, the more potent it was in killing the cancer cells. more…

It is proven that fruits and vegetables have anti-cancer properties and are beneficial in preventing certain cancers.

Increase plant phytochemical

I came across a cancer research study that cites that there are about 20,000 to 30,000 phytochemicals – the cancer fighting compounds found in plants. Ironically, phytochemicals are produced as a defense mechanisms of plants when they are cut up, destroyed, bruised or are exposed to adverse temperatures, or are lacking in essential nutrients to thrive. When plants are exposed to Ultraviolet light and high temperatures anthocyanins, flavones, sinap esters, isoflavonoids and psoralens are activated and produced as a defense mechanism for the survival of the plant. At low temperatures anthocyanins are produces or when attacked by pathogens such as bacteria, fungi and viruses a number of pytochemicals such as pterecarpans, isoflavans, prenylated isopflavones, coumarins and a lot more are produced as defense against these pathogens. The same is true when nutrients in the soil are lacking. Low nitrogen soil content makes the plant produce flavonoids, isoflavones, a low phosphate soil content produces anthocyanins while a low iron causes pheolic acids to be produced. Like wise when plants are wounded numerous chemicals are produced. more…

prostate_cancer_gene_healthy_diet
Genes are responsible for the expression of our health conditions. Health conscious people, like ourselves are so interested to know the diseases that they may have inherited from their ancestors. Certainly, forewarned is being forearmed. But, be obsessed and anxious, to think that once they have the gene for a certain disease, they are destined to suffer and die as their relatives did. Maybe by inaction! But when I reviewed recent studies, this shouldn’t really be your scenario. I really think that if you have a gene for a certain chronic illness you can prevent its full blown expression. more…

Most of us think that all fruits and vegetables are created equal. To ascertain this, I did some research and surprisingly, I discovered that highly colored fruits and vegetables are more saturated with phytochemicals. As we all know, phytochemicals are highly effective in preventing chronic illnesses and prostate cancer.

Canto, left, a 27-year-old rhesus monkey, is on a restricted diet, while Owen, 29, is not. The two monkeys are part of a study of the links between diet and aging.

New Studies on monkeys

The NewYork times reported recently that Richard Weindruch’s team for the University of Wisconsin published an ongoing study in the journal Science, showed an increase in life quality for the group that followed the diet than the group who ate the quantity they wanted. The studies had been going since 20 years and should wait till all the monkeys are dead to confirm the conclusion on cancer protection. The study was published midway as the results even now give a clear indication on the difference between the two groups under the study: one with restrictive diet and the other without.  more…

This is the perfect example of the opposite of processed Food. In complete food, the texture and the envelope of the food is there. In processed food or refined food the peel or skin is dissolved or ground to get rid of it. This action takes out most of the vitamins, minerals and phytochemicals that we need as weapons to fight prostate cancer.
