Cranberries evoke memories of Thanksgiving. That juicy stuffed turkey is surely served with delicious cranberry sauce. We’ve probably heard that cranberries prevent urinary tract infections. It appears that they can help some women. But it isn’t really a treatment. Now, cancer research discovered that cranberries can fight cancer. So why not consume cranberries not only on thanksgiving but the whole year through?

These bright red gems are native to North America. Cranberries grow just above water. In earlier times, whalers and mariners carried cranberries on their ships. These small ruby berries are chockfull of vitamin C which prevent scurvy. Plus they are a rich source of fiber. more…

Apart from the emotional pain cancer inflicts upon its survivors, it produces physical pain. The pain can be excruciatingly painful and debilitates most patients. And that’s not to be taken lightly.

Chemotherapy for breast cancer patients involves treatment with aromatase inhibitors. In estrogen dependent breast cancers, aromatase inhibitors prevent sexual hormones to be converted into estrogen. Where estrogen, on the other hand, supports cancer growth. Nevertheless, most breast cancer survivors on aromatase inhibitor chemo complain of skeletal and joint pain, muscle pain and weakness. These painful symptoms are interpreted as side effects of chemotherapy. more…

Knowledge keeps us out trouble. Experience acquired over the years is helpful too. Sometimes, experience offers us painful lessons of the do’s and don’ts of daily living. Cancer can be a wake -up call about our current lifestyle. Like a boxer, we’ve got to give our best when the bell rings to summon us on stage. more…

Eating right to fight cancer can be a long run in a maze. It’s real difficult to fight cancer with food if we don’t know what they are and where to look for them.

Functional Foods

We know that veggies and fruits cut our cancer risks. The American Cancer Association recommends consuming 5-10 servings of vegetables and fruits daily to prevent us from developing cancer. We’ve got scientific studies telling us that veggies and fruits have phytonutrients that are active against cancer. But we’re turned off when we’re served with plain veggies. Those crunchy junk foods give us a minute of nirvana. Sadly, those veggies lose out in the competition. more…

MED2100(photo)For most cancer patients, Christmas is a difficult time of year. When nearly everyone is partying and having fun, they’d be contented to be left alone. They’d fear the reaction of people and even among family members. A person with cancer receiving chemo wouldn’t want to attend a family reunion on Christmas eve. She’d be embarrassed by showing up hairless. She’d rather not go lest the reaction of family and friends would add to her stress. Or a family member undergoing cancer therapy wouldn’t be allowed to participate in the pleasure of food preparation. They’d be shunned from the excitement of Christmas. Does this sound familiar? For cancer patients undergoing treatment, holidays are indeed difficult. more…

rosie-o-donnell-breast-cancer (3)

Everyone was concern about the latest news related to Rosie O’Donnell who had another breast cancer scare. The 48-year-old actress and comedienne recently underwent a biopsy of two lumps found on her breasts revealed the news in the form of a poem on her blog:

“Wednesday I had an MRI instead of a mammogram,” O’Donnell wrote 2 hours later the doctor who warned of false positives called to tell there were 2 spots but not to worry they looked innocent enough. My name is called,” she said. “A biopsy she tells me on the way back to the MRI tube. probably nothing. someone is holding my hand. another is rubbing my back. the dr is saying ‘only a few minutes – i am sorry it hurts’. it does not hurt me at all. i feel nothing but the love of strangers hands.” more…

breast-cancer-awareness--708

Worldwide, October is celebrated as Breast Cancer Awareness Month. The theme conveys awareness of the disease that cause so much misery among women and sometimes men. What better ways to be aware than finding a way to keep it off your life.

Breast Cancer rates are skyrocketing but survival rates are dramatically increasing. Thanks, to advances in treatment. But prevention, as they say is still better than cure. A change in lifestyle can do much to prevent breast cancer. Exercise at least 30 minutes a day. And every day, don’t forget to consume five to ten servings of veggies and fruit.
To make your meals varied and interesting, think of soy. Soy is a functional food that can help you prevent breast cancer. more…

Cranberries – scientifically named Vacciniun macrocarpon – grow lushly in Northern America and are also known as American cranberry or bog cranberry. Cranberries are functional foods.

Cranberries are used in a variety of American dishes. They are cooked into that sumptuous sauce for that Thanksgiving turkey. Cranberry juice is a popular drink mixed with other fruit juices. This fruit is so useful, why we do not use it all year around. more…

Clearly, cancer is a major cause of death in most parts of the world. Mortality statistics reveal that one out of three deaths is due to cancer. Also, cancer inflicts too much suffering.

Cancer is a genetic disease. Generally, this is how most people think. If your dad had it so would you. However, scientific research doesn’t support this way of thinking. Heredity doesn’t necessary give you an ill fated road map to your death bed. Your genes aren’t the most critical factor but rather, what you eat! Your genes would be influenced by what goes through your mouth. However, eating habit are the most important factor. more…

Cancer love simple foods. There’s a big buzz on what you should eat or not to eat to fight cancer. Sometimes, this gets confusing. Sugar is a simple food. People believe that sugar feed cancer. However, the truth is cancer research doesn’t show any direct link. Sugar doesn’t make cancer replicate faster. Your cancer mass doesn’t grow any bigger with high intake of sugary food on occasional time. more…
