With so much information going around (the info can be right or wrong), I really wonder if as the Americans are eating what is right? What actually is the composition of our daily diet? Is it the right diet? If not, how can we improve our diet?
Needless to say, the United States Department of Agriculture enlightens with some answers. This summer, it has released a dietary guideline for Americans.
Latest data from the National Health
According to the Nutrition Examination Survey, Americans eat too many calories especially from the carbohydrate (candy) food group. They eat too much solid fats like margarine, butter and mayo. Plus they enjoy too much added sugars as in sodas and sweetened fruit juices. Moreover, they consume too much refined grains, think of white bread and cookies. And of course too much sodium found in canned food and chips.
And guess what they eat too little of? They eat a minuscule amount from the healthy food groups where the functional foods are. Functional foods help you fight cancer as well as other chronic and degenerative diseases. Naturally, these functional foods are veggies and fruits that are also rich in dietary fiber. Additionally, they poorly consume foods rich in Vitamin D. Americans eat a little amount of foods loaded with unsaturated fatty acids –omega 3s – found in nuts and extra virgin olive oil. Americans’ diet has a little amount of whole grains and other important foods packed with important nutrients.
Balance your Diet
Obviously, we’re far beyond eating a wholesome diet. If most of your food comes from the carbohydrates (candy) group you have a tendency to eat less healthy foods. Conversely, if you eat more from the healthy food groups, you’ll have a tendency to eat less from the carbohydrate (candy) group.
Bottom line
Eating healthy functional foods endow you with the right weapons to beat cancer. The American Cancer Society recommends 5-10 daily servings of varied veggies and fruits. You’d want to eat right? Follow this recommendation and you’ll finally eat right.
